Keeping Ebola at bay in Liberia
One tenth of the world’s population does not have access to clean water and every 20 seconds a child dies as a result of poor sanitation. Riders for Health is mobilising health workers like Desterio Mutinye to ensure safe, clean water is available in the most remote communities.
Desterio is a water and sanitation manager. He educates people about the importance of clean water and of maintaining and repairing water sources. Since receiving his motorcycle, Desterio can now see 10 times the number of people and visit four times more villages each week. He says: ‘It was really hard before, we used to walk or use old bicycles. I would reach the community late and tired and could not do my work well. Now I can do my work as planned.’
‘I have had three serious cases of typhoid in Shanderema village and I know that if I did not have my motorcycle it would have been very tragic for the villagers.’ Desterio Mutinye
